Learning Goals

After completing this tutorial ...

you are familiar with the augmentation indications and can thus expand your own range of indications of dental implants (diagnostics and indications),

you can better assess the level of difficulty, complications and risks, but also your own operational limits for augmentation

you are familiar with the basics and peculiarities of bone wound healing and the importance of the dynamic balance of bone augmentation and augmentation for augmentation surgery.

Summary

Bone augmentation serves three purposes: First, it serves to improve function by allowing the implant to be placed at the prosthetically optimal position. Secondly, it serves the aesthetics, because the implant position and especially the bone shoulder on the implant are the basis of the soft tissue. Finally, it also serves to improve the implant prognosis, because augmentation allows an implant to be surrounded on all sides by solid bone and to be sufficiently long and thick. This Module 5.1 describes the patient selection for augmentation surgery, the SAC classification, and the consequences and severity of alveolar crest atrophy. The structure of the bone tissue and the biology of bone healing, also depending on different defect forms, are discussed. Important is the chapter on the value and use of autologous bone grafts in combination with bone replacement materials and other biomaterials.
